Pediatric Cardiologists specialize in the treatment of congenital and acquired heart diseases in newborns, infants, toddlers and young adults. Some of these birth defects may be caused by structural problems resulting in incorrect or inefficient blood flow through the heart, or may be caused by disordered heart rhythm.
Pediatric cardiology also involves caring for pregnant women and newborn babies with heart problems and helps ensure improved quality of life for such patients. It may require investigations like heart imaging with ultrasound (Echocardiography) and/or recording the heart’s electrical signals (ECG & Holter Monitoring).
Some pediatric patients may also require to undergo heart catheterization investigation for diagnosis or treatment of disease. Pediatric cardiology works in tandem with allied specialist physicians and healthcare professionals to ensure that additional or concealed ailments causing heart disease are treated properly as well, and ensure the consequences of their heart condition does not impede their regular life.
