Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery is performed on patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) to help improve blood flow to the heart.
The coronary arteries of patients with CHD get clogged over time by a waxy substance called plaque. This blockage inhibits the flow of blood to the heart muscles, leading to a reduced supply of oxygen and blood to the heart. As a result, the patient can get a heart attack.
To correct this condition, cardiologists recommend a surgery that would allow the blood flow to go around, or ‘bypass’ this blockage in the artery and supply the heart with the required amount of oxygen and blood for it to perform normally.
The patients need to adopt a healthier lifestyle after the bypass surgery. A close watch on the diet, regular exercise, medical advice and regular medication are necessary for patients to lead a normal life after the surgery. It is also advisable for patients to learn thoroughly about their condition, so that they may know how to prepare themselves for surgery, the complications that may arise, and the precautions they need to consider during recovery.
